Wow, super friendly and great customer service from a family owned business that will be turning 38 this September. I felt like I was back at my hometown ice cream place but even better. What a pleasant surprise and good ice cream flavors. I had the buttercream and it was the way it should be and it definitely cooled me off son such a hot day.
I've been a customer of Hank's ice cream for years, but realized I have never written a review of this establishment. I can attest to the fact a real Jamaican family friend I know loves the rum raisin flavor here. My favorite flavors are still banana pudding and butter pecan. The lemon flavor is also delicious. I kind of wish Hank's had a better location and updated look so more people could try this ice cream. This is now one of the oldest ice cream shops in Houston. So, I recommend this place for sure...especially given how hot it is these days!
you haven't had the best ice cream till you had Hank's.
The ice cream is great! I would just call before you go. I've been twice where no was there during business hours or they closed early.
I am so embarrassed -- I recently moved from Dallas to Houston and haven't been able to find a a $1 waffle cone ice cream anywhere in Houston. When I saw a yelp photo of "Waffle cone $1" I thought it meant the ice cream + cone were $1. I ran to this store in the rain to satisfy my weekend craving + left my purse, only bringing $3 with me. One scoop on a cone is actually $7! But the ladies were so nice about it when they didn't have to be. I should've offered to sweep the floor or something. I got the strawberry cheesecake ice cream + she was right. It was the best ice cream I've had in a long time. Next time I stop by, I'm gonna make sure I overpay.
Even though I came close to closing time was still able to scoop 3 pints (strawberry, butter pecan, and banana pudding) and a vanilla cup to go! It's 100 degrees outside ice cream is a must. You really can't miss with this mom & pop shop
(3.5 stars) Like other reviews mentioned, this is a local mom-and-pop ice cream shop that's Black-owned. I came here before closing on a Saturday and there wasn't anyone there. I sampled their infamous banana pudding flavor (I didn't love it and it tasted slightly artificial but I'm also not crazy about banana) and their popular butter pecan flavor (not as flavorful as I'd have liked and pecans weren't as plentiful as I'd liked). They didn't have too many other interesting flavors or variety and I ended up getting 2 scoops of chocolate and coconut in their regular cup for $5 after tax. The ice cream was good but not special, I wish there was more variety but I understand it can be difficult. If you like banana pudding, definitely consider giving it a try!
Hanks is a Houston staple and a favorite amongst Houstonians. The ice cream is made in house and is straight up dope! The banana pudding is such a great concept and their most famous flavor IMO. Also can't go wrong with butter pecan and the strawberry shortcake flavors. Well, can you go wrong with any flavor of ice cream!? I enjoyed interacting with the ladies behind the counter. They are real sweet and love serving others. The scoops they give are generous. It's that Texas love and hospitality right? The interior is a bit outdated and could use some renovating. Especially that tv! Fortunately they got the ice cream part down cold!
Currently, we continue to protest for George Floyd and stand with Black Lives Matter, my family and I were talking about supporting our own. Start funneling money back into our own communities. My aunt said "we need a black owned ice cream shop." My uncle replied "there is probably one." I googled and found Hanks. The family owned business has been around over 35 years and from wall to wall and in every bite you can taste the love from this family. The butter pecan was so creamy and the 1 scoop on a waffle cone I chose was perfect. My uncle got his pint of Butter Pecan to go as well as my aunt with her pint of Lemon. My aunt just couldn't resist so half of hers made it home. The lemon taste just like real lemon. If you want a taste of home made deliciousness, try them. And you know how after eating ice cream you NEED to drink water? I do anyway because I feel parched. Didn't feel parched after Hanks. I'm just sayin'
